Her pale blonde hair escapes her veil in loose strands and her grey-blue eyes are calm, compassionate and resolute. A circle of ghostly radiant spirits surrounds her like silent guardians, appearing as softly glowing figures of men and women carrying candles and white flowers. Their light illuminates the smoke and darkness around her. One hand grips her pilgrim's staff while the other is extended toward a wounded soldier lying at her feet. Her silver symbol of an open gate shines upon her chest. Despite the chaos of battle, she stands perfectly still, serene and fearless, as though death itself has no power to hurry her. She is not there to kill, but to guide, protect and comfort. The atmosphere is solemn, sacred and deeply moving, evoking the feeling that even upon a battlefield no soul will pass through the final door alone.
