A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum. As a young Roman citizen, I stumbled upon the slave market one sunny morning, where the air buzzed with the chatter of merchants and the clinking of coins. Among the stalls, a group of enslaved women from distant lands caught my eye—each with her own unique story etched into her features. There was the buxom blonde from the North, her laughter echoing across the market; the Nubian woman with her flowing curls, whose eyes held secrets only the desert could tell; and the strong-armed Black African woman, whose strength seemed to challenge the very chains that bound her. As I gazed upon them, a sudden realization struck me—a moment of connection amidst the chaos, a spark of resilience that transcended language and culture.
